HIGH SWELLS UPDATE
2010-02-12

12TH February 2010:  A cold front now in the vicinity of the Virgin Islands has produced light to moderate showers this morning.  Today the front will slowly move south east, bringing it even closer to the region while dissipating. This is expected to decrease the chances of wide spread precipitation.

The front, however, is expected to greatly affect marine conditions. Very large northerly swells occurring over a long period should arrive across the local Atlantic waters this morning, then rapidly build and spread across Caribbean passages during the day and into Saturday. Seas of 13 to 15 ft are expected across local Atlantic waters with 7 to 11 ft seas possible across the local passages.

Small craft advisories will therefore remain in effect until 6AM Sunday.

In addition, the swells are expected to produce extremely rough and hazardous marine conditions with hazardous surf and rip currents for both today and Saturday.

A high surf warning and a coastal flood warning are in effect for all northern coastlines of the Virgin Islands from today until 8 am Saturday. Beach Flag Warnings have also been issued

Red Flags are flying at Trunk Bay, Rogues Bay, Lambert Beach & Little Bay. Red Flags mean "Danger - No Swimming." (The Mooring Field at the Baths is Closed).

Yellow Flags
are flying at Smuggler's Cove, Long Bay (West End), Apple Bay, Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay, Josiah's Bay & The Baths NPT. Yellow Flags mean "Caution - Weak Swimmers are discouraged from entering the water."

Purple Flags mean "Marine Life Warning i.e. Jellyfish."

Lifeguards are on duty at Cane Garden Bay 9am to 5pm!

Please note: Beach Safety Flag warnings, are current for the day of issue and may change accordingly, if the conditions exist to the following day another warning will be issued for that day. Liability for loss of business or otherwise is not accepted by your having taken the above safety advice.

DDM EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM
Tropical Watch

The 2010 hurricane season is predicted to be more active than the average for the 1950-2000 seasons. The December 2009 report estimates approximately 11-16 named storms, 6-8 hurricanes and 3-5 major hurricanes occurring during the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, which is more typical of years in an active era, such as the 1995 season.
