TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL ALERT STATEMENT

THIS IS FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
.AT 5 AM ECT OR 0900Z THE CENTRE OF TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 13.3 NORTH, LONGITUDE 58.4 WEST OR ABOUT 84 MILES EAST NORTHEAST OF BARBADOS. TROPICAL STORM CHANTAL IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST AT 26 MILES PER HOUR.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 50 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. SOME STRENGTHENING IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND UP TO 90 MILES FROM THE CENTRE.
THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1010 MB OR 29.83 INCHES.
THE CENTER OF CHANTAL WILL MOVE THROUGH THE WINDWARD ISLANDS LATER TODAY BRINGING CLOUDY TO OVERCAST SKIES WITH SHOWERS AND TUNDERSTORMS ALONG WITH GUSTY WINDS.
RAINFALL AMOUNT OF 2 TO 4 INCHES COULD FALL DURING ITS PASSAGE. OVER THE WINDWARD ISLANDS. THIS COULD LEAD TO SEVERE FLASH FLOODING IN LOW LYING AREAS AND LANDSLIDES IN OTHERS.
TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED OVER THE LEEWARD OR BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER THE CLOUD BANDS COULD REACH THE ISLANDS AND BRING ADDITIONAL SHOWERS OR POSSIBLY THUNERSTORMS TO THE LEEWARDS LATER TODAY.
ALL RESIDENTS ARE URGED TO MONITOR THE MOVEMENT OF CHANTAL CLOSELY AND BE PREPARED TO ACT IF NECESSARY.
SMALL CRAFT OPERATORS SHOULD REMAIN IN PORT AND SEA BATHERS SHOULD AVOID THE WATERS TODAY.
