BULLETIN – DEPARTMENT OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT STAGES TSUNAMI SIMULATION

March 25, 20141212Views

The
Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is informing the general public that it
will be conducting its annual simulation exercise, Caribe Wave/Lantex 14 on
Wednesday, March 26.

Several
Government departments, schools and companies have registered to participate in
the tsunami simulation exercise which will test their evacuation procedures.

Large
numbers of pedestrians are likely to be traversing the streets of Road Town, testing
the new evacuation routes and assembly areas identified by the DDM, and which
are featured on the tsunami evacuation maps placed in high traffic public
spaces.

Two
cruise ships will be port on Wednesday, adding hundreds of cruise ship
passengers to normal pedestrian traffic. The DDM is therefore urging motorists
to be particularly mindful of the additional pedestrians on the streets during
the simulation exercise.

Residents
of the BVI are encouraged to view the exercise seriously as it presents a key
opportunity to test disaster plans and evacuation procedures.
