Tuesday, June 11 – As part of our continued agreement with
the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom, the Department of Disaster
Management (DDM) again will benefit from an intern’s work on Crisis and Disaster
Management.

Ms. Emma Higgins,
an intern from the University of Portsmouth, England, is in the Virgin Islands
for four weeks working with the DDM to conduct a comparison study to determine
if increased immigration to the islands is impacting the success of the
Disaster Management Programme in the Virgin Islands

In
describing the work she is doing with the DDM Ms. Higgins said, “The study will
be used to determine the impact rapid population movement can have on the
disaster management’s public information and education programme. And if so,
identify ways we might be able to better reach the residents.

Director of the DDM, Ms. Sharleen DaBreo said, “We are pleased to be
able to accommodate interns such as Ms. Higgins from the University of
Portsmouth.  Emma is the fifth student
who has joined us over the last four years. Her work will complement the
Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) of the study completed in 2012, develop
strategies and address the gaps we might have missed in developing our public information
plans for 2014 to 2018.
