The Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) continues to demonstrate its support for the recovery of the health sector in the British Virgin Islands following the devastating impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
PAHO’s Area on Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief this week donated two vehicles as part of its pledge of $1M to support the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon. Ronnie Skelton and his team accepted the vehicles which will be used by the Environmental Health Division in the execution of the Vector Control Programme.
PAHO has also provided a significant amount of equipment to support the Vector Control Programme including truck mounted and mobile foggers, chemicals, solutions and other accessories.
Thanking PAHO for its ongoing support, particularly in the area of vector control, Hon Skelton said, “In light of the heavy rains, we are going to have mosquitoes and it is important for us to have transportation on all the islands, to be able to control mosquito breeding in the Territory.”
Chief Environmental Health Officer, Lionel Michael who was present for the handing over, also welcomed PAHO’s support but encouraged residents to do their part in helping to control the mosquito population by identifying and eliminating breeding areas around their homes.
