Public Information Committee to Focus on Safety at Work

The importance of Safety at Work will be highlighted during the month of April
as the Public Information and Awareness sub-committee of the National Disaster
Management Council launches its ‘Workplace Safety” campaign.

The campaign will also include “The Importance of Disaster Plans,” “What to
do in the event of an Emergency” and “The Use of Safety Equipment”.

The campaign will run throughout this month and will culminate with the
Territory’s participation in the International Labour Organisation World Day for
Health and Safety at Work on April 28.

Ms. Sylvia George, Health and Safety Coordinator with the Department of Human
Resources said the importance of being safe at work cannot be stressed enough.
She stated that Part IX of the Labour Code which focuses on Health, Safety and
Welfare, states that both employers and employees have a role to play in
ensuring working conditions are safe and healthy. 

Mrs George also encouraged persons to be aware of the steps to be safe using
the acronyom SAFESpot the Hazards,
Assess the Risks, Find a Safer Way,
Everyday.

Throughout the month, messages focused on “Safety at Work” will be aired on
Radio Station ZBVI 780 AM and on other media houses. Additionally, Ms. George
will be a guest on JTV’s Spotlight Programme on April 14 and the Department of
Information and Public Relations’ Radio Report.

The National Disaster Management Council (NDMC) is chaired by His Excellency
the Governor and coordinates disaster preparedness and response readiness
activities. The NDMC’s Public Information and Awareness sub-committee promotes
public awareness of hazards and disasters, among other responsibilities.
