5th October 2010 – The Managing Director of the BVI Airports Authority is advising travelers that the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport was closed for operations as of 7:15 pm this evening. This decision is as a result of heavy rainfall, low visibility and sustained winds near tropical storm force.
The Airport is expected to reopen tomorrow morning at 7am unless conditions continue to deteriorate at which time the situation will be evaluated. Any decision regarding further closure of operations for tomorrow will be announced to travelers before 7am tomorrow.
As a result of the heavy rainfall, there have been areas that have been severely flooded. Residents and visitors are advised to stay off the roads as some roads have become impassable or dangerous to drive on. If driving becomes a must, please be cautious when doing so.
The DDM remains on high alert, monitoring systems and providing weather releases throughout the weekend. Please visit the Department of Disaster Management’s website at www.bviddm.com for continuously updated information.
