WARNINGS REMAIN IN EFFECT FOR HAZARDOUS SEAS

January 27, 20182423Views

27th January 2018 – A special marine statement for small craft operators is in effect for the British Virgin Islands until Wednesday, 31 January 2018.

Hazardous seas due to a combination of sea swells and wind waves are expected to be a threat to the life and property of mariners. A small craft warning is in effect for the British Virgin Islands. Sea bathers are advised to refrain from these waters as there is a risk of rip currents taking them out to sea.

A small craft warning means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots and or seas of 7 feet or greater are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small crafts. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions. For the above-mentioned conditions, small craft operators should stay in port.

Today’s Forecast

Synopsis: A very strong high-pressure system along with the presence of a frontal system to the north of the area will continue to generate very high winds and dangerous seas over and around the islands today and tonight. In addition, these high winds will transport shallow pockets of moisture across the islands at times, this maintaining a moderate chance for showers.

Wx: Partly sunny skies today and partly cloudy skies tonight with a moderate chance for some brief passing showers.

Winds: NE-ENE at 26-44km/h or 14-24kts with higher gusts over open waters..
