Hurricane Larry Update

Larry has changed little in terms of intensity based upon satellite imagery. Winds remain 120 mph. We still expect some slight intensification over the next day or so before the wind shear starts to increase a bit over the hurricane. Larry is forecast to peak with winds of 130 mph in 24 to 36 hours. Once the shear increases, a gradual weakening trend is expected. The current west-northwesterly motion should become more northwesterly over the next day or so. Before reaching Bermuda, we expect a turn more to the north to occur. Our forecast track keeps the strongest winds and rains east of Bermuda, though any deviation to the west would bring tropical storm force winds to the islands. Thereafter, an acceleration to the northeast is expected, which will take the system toward SE Newfoundland next Friday or Saturday.

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

SURF:  Swells generated by Larry are expected to reach the Lesser Antilles on Sunday, and will continue to spread westward to portions of the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and Bermuda Monday and Tuesday.  Significant swells will likely reach the eastern United States coastline after Labor Day.  These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.  Please consult products from your local weather office.
