HIGH WIND ADVISORY ISSUED FOR THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

December 28, 20182287Views

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services has issued a High Wind Advisory for the British Virgin Islands until Sunday 30 December 2018.

Strong winds of up to 52 km/h (28 knots, 32 mph) with gusts to gale/storm-force – 74 km/h (40 knots, 45 mph), are expected. These strong and gusty winds are due to a very steep pressure gradient across the area.

Locations (to be) affected: Especially over open waters, northern coastal areas, high elevations and open terrains.

Timing: Until Sunday.

Impacts (possible/likely/expected): Includes injuries; very hazardous seas; soil erosion; localized disruptions of businesses; disruption to outdoor and sporting activities; disruption of transportation (air and especially sea); vehicular accidents and financial losses.

Precautionary/preparedness actions: A high wind advisory means winds of 41 to 61 km/h (22 to 33 knots, 25 to 38 mph) with higher gusts are imminent or occurring but are not strong enough to warrant a high wind warning. Wind of this strength could make some outdoor activities uncomfortable, if not outright dangerous. High winds can create dangerous fallen or blowing objects. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, which can be blown away, and caution should be taken if or when driving.

Forecaster: Dale Destin
