HEAVY RAINFALL AND GUSTY WINDS MOVING ACROSS LEEWARD ISLANDS

JULY 29, 2020 11AM — Potential Tropical Cyclone 9 is bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the Leeward Islands. Tropical storm conditions are moving across portions of the Leeward Islands and will spread across the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this afternoon through Thursday morning. The BVI remains under Tropical Storm Warning.

The National Hurricane Centre advises that the system is now centred near latitude 15.8 North, longitude 63.7 West with maximum sustained winds near 45 miles per hour.

It is moving to the west-northwest at approximately 23 miles per hour. On the present track, the system will move near or just south of Puerto Rico later today and tonight.

This system is forecast to develop into a tropical storm later today or tonight.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 275 miles (445 km) primarily to the north and northeast of the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb (29.71 inches).

A small craft advisory remains in effect until at least Thursday.

  • Tropical storm force winds possible up to 275 miles from centre of system
  • Rainfall of 3-6 inches, with possible flash flooding
  • High surf and rip-current condition today and into tomorrow
