TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE ALERT STATEMENT

THIS IS FOR THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS

…PHILIPPE LIKELY TO LOITER JUST EAST OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS FOR ANOTHER 3 TO 4 DAYS …

AT 5 AM ECT OR 0900Z THE CENTER OF TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 18.5 NORTH, LONGITUDE 55.2 WEST OR APPROXIMATELY 445 MILES EAST OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS AND 616 MILES EAST OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. PHILIPPE IS MOVING TOWARD THE SOUTHWEST AT 2 MILES PER HOUR.

A SLOW SOUTHWESTWARD MOTION IS EXPECTED THROUGH TO SATURDAY NIGHT. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH (75 KM/H) WITH HIGHER GUSTS. LITTLE CHANGE IN STRENGTH IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT FEW DAYS, BUT SOME STRENGTHENING IS POSSIBLE OVER THE WEEKEND.

TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND UP TO 140 MILES FROM THE CENTER.THE ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1003 MB OR 29.62 INCHES.

BASED UPON THE LATEST POSITION AND ANALYSES, TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE IS FORECAST TO MOVE A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS THEN TAKE A GRADUAL TURN TOWARD THE WEST AND NORTHWEST THIS SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT. GIVEN ITS DISORGANIZED NATURE AND OTHER UNCERTAINTIES, IT IS STILL EARLY TO KNOW DEFINITIVELY WHAT SPECIFIC IMPACTS WITH RESPECT TO WINDS AND RAINFALL TOTALS WILL AFFECT THE ISLANDS. ABOVE NORMAL SWELLS WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN COASTLINES AND A HIGH SURF ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT.

NO SPECIFIC WATCHES OR WARNINGS ARE REQUIRED AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER RESIDENTS IN THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS SHOULD CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF TROPICAL STORM PHILIPPE.

REPEATING THE 11 PM ECT POSITION, 18.5 N, 55.2 W. MOVEMENT TOWARD THE SOUTHWEST NEAR 2 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 45 MPH. THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1003 MB.
