8TH June 2011 –An area of low pressure and associated trough will continue to affect weather conditions across the British Virgin Islands.
Cloudy to overcast skies with occasional showers and possible isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue to impact the Virgin Islands today. Similar conditions are expected tonight. As a result of these ongoing conditions and the current hydrological conditions across the islands, as well as the potential for periods of heavy rain, the Antigua Met office has extended the Flash Flood Warning for the BVI until 4 pm today.
A Flash Flood Warning means that moderate to major flooding is imminent or occurring in low lying and flood prone areas. Avoid driving through low lying areas covered with water and mountain roads with steep cliffs on one side during and just after heavy rains. Heavy rain can cause mudslides in areas of steep terrain.
The DDM will continue to monitor the weather conditions and advise the public accordingly. Visit the DDM’s website at www.bviddm.com and subscribe to receive updates.
